I heard them while out walking Joey in the morning sunshine;
Their coo and the sound of them flying from tree to tree is uniquely theirs;
No other bird around here sounds like them;
But it's May; Mother's Day even;
They normally don't arrive until early September;
we've heard them for years;
Mark and I in the hot tub;
and there they were;
to eat the over-ripened berries on the Elderberry tree;
Natures own wine;
and when the tree is bare;
they leave, gone for another year.
I've listened to others tell about Marks visits to them;
I'm happy for them when he does, but afterwards I find myself saddened;
saddened that I don't get those same visits;
I ask Why? I don't get an answer....
I wonder today;
Was this my answer?
Is this the sign I've been waiting for?
Why today, after 11 1/2 years, did the Doves appear on Mother's Day?
While I will never know their reason;
I will take the liberty of seeing it;
as a sign
of Mark saying Happy Mothers Day.
